When you cannot forgive
the self, step above and see yourself as we do. 
It is not necessary to continue berating the self.  Once the mistake has been recognized and
adjusted, it is time to move on.  Cease reliving
it.  This serves no purpose.  If you must obsess about something, then ceaselessly
see yourself now modeling the behavior you know is best.  See yourself acting as the spirit-being you
know yourself to be.  From this higher
perspective, see all of your fellow human beings struggling, including
yourself.  They forgive you when you are
contrite.  Let go of the weight with
gratitude for the lesson learned and move on. 
Get your feet out of the mud.  Clean
them off and leave no dirty footprints.
